Who's Poppy?
Poppy's Sports Pub & Grille is named after George Sisler, one of baseball's often Forgotten Greats. Many remember him as "The Sizzler" or "Gorgeous George", but "Poppy" was a nickname tied closer to his family roots. George made his name well known to baseball by being a versatile player for the St. Louis Browns from 1915 to 1930. He is considered one of the best-fielding first baseman of his time, but remembered for his fierce hitting ability. His lifetime average was .340 and George hit a .407 in 1920 and .420 in 1922. George is also known for his 41 game hitting streak and long held record for of 257 hits in a season. His record was recently broken by Ichiro Suzuki. In 1939 he became the first, first-baseman elected into the Hall of Fame. During his years in the majors, he played with legends such as Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, and Rogers Hornsby. Unlike these household names, George faded from baseball's collective consciousness. His quiet and reserved nature, and being essentially free of scandal, might be responsible for his becoming one of Baseball's Forgotten Greats. Poppy's Sports Pub & Grille aims to commemorate the silent legend of George Sisler, both for his remarkable baseball career and the loving, family-centered legacy he has left behind.
